Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday (Dec 13) congratulated Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister on the impressive victory of Conservative Party at the National Elections of UK held on Dec 12.

she observed the Tory victory as a reaffirmation of the tremendous trust and confidence the people of the UK reposed on the Party’s leadership, a media release added.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh will look forward to the personal intervention of the British prime minister to ensure justice for the Rohingyas.

“With the support of the international community and UK’s global leadership, it will be possible to ensure Myanmar’s accountability for the atrocities committed against the Rohingyas, and that the Rohingyas will be able to go back to their homeland with rights, dignity, safety, and in a sustainable manner,” she said.

In this connection, the prime minister recalled Johnson’s visit to Bangladesh and the Rohingya camps in February 2018.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina invited her British counterpart at the centenary celebrations of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 2020 in Bangladesh.

She said Bangladesh and the United Kingdom enjoy a special relationship deeply rooted in shared values of the very vibrant Bangladesh-British diaspora in the UK.

“We in Bangladesh recall in deep gratitude the support of the then Conservative government of prime minister Sir Edward Heath extended to our Father of the Nation and my beloved father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the people of Bangladesh during our War of Liberation in 1971,” the release added.
