US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat has expressed hope that the current Election Commission would hold free, fair and credible election in the coming days.
“I am hopeful. I am always hopeful,” she said after a two-hour meeting with Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and his secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed Thursday afternoon.
She was responding to a question whether she feels that the current EC can conduct a free and fair election.
Citing examples, she said, there are numerous instances when Bangladesh had free and fair elections.
About the criticism for his comments on Gazipur Election, she said, “The American ambassador doesn’t know what she is talking about, I hope you wouldn’t say that.”
Those in the government who disagreed with her have the ability to do so, she added.
Criticism is part of parcel of the democracy, but the bad thing is if anybody disengaged due to this.
“By knocking on the door after a criticism and nobody answered, that would be disturbing,” she said.
