This photo, collected from project official Atikul Islam’s Facebook page, shows the housing project under construction at Bhasan char. The visit of a United Nations (UN) technical team to assess the viability and security measures of housing facilities built for Rohingyas at Bhashan Char has been deferred.
An official of the foreign ministry said, “The proposed inspection has been deferred and a new date is yet to be fixed.”
The UN team was scheduled for a three-day visit from Sunday (Nov 17) to the Noakhali island, where the government undertook a housing project costing over Tk 3 billion.
According to government’s proposal, as many as 100,000 Rohingyas, who now live in teeming and squalid camps in southeastern Cox’s Bazar, will be relocated to Bhashan Char. The western countries and UN have doubts over the safety issues of the remote island.
