“However, the new law and penalties will be implemented in phases. The fines will be lower for the time being,” he said on Sunday (Nov 17) while addressing a seminar at university in Dhaka.
The new higher amount of fines doesn’t mean more money for the state coffer, said the senior Cabinet member before describing it as a way to bring discipline on the roads.
“The law will be effective from today after the two-week cease, however, law enforcers have been instructed not to be harsh on drivers,” he said.
Describing strikes by transport workers in the past against the new law as an attempt to create a "deadlock", the road transport minister warned that traffic laws have to be obeyed while driving.
On Nov 1, the new law went into effect following a notification issued by the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry.
The Road Transport Bill 2018 was passed by parliament on Sept 19, 2018. It kept a provision of maximum five years' jail for any death or serious injuries caused by reckless or negligent driving.
