The new road transport law has been implemented from Nov 1 and this has triggered a large line at BRTA to get proper licences, digital number plates, fitness certificates etc. BRTA officials are struggling to deal with the sudden pressure.
Officials say that since punishment has been increased in the new law, people are fearful and have come to fulfil all the required formalities.
Deputy director of BRTA, Shafiquzzaman Bhuiyan, said: “The pressure of work has intensified at the BRTA and since new laws stipulate stricter punishment, car owners and drivers are coming to get their papers in order.”
In addition to 2 existing ones, 12 more digital fitness machines have been placed, he added.
At a press conference, DMP commissioner Shafiqul Islam said that they will take a relaxed approach in handing out fines and cases in the next one week.
The common scene now at BRTA shows hundreds of motorcylces waiting to get digital number plates plus private cars, vans, trucks waiting to get fitness clearance.
A truck driver says: “In the absence of fitness certificate, the fine will be Tk. 25000 plus imprisonment so we are getting the correct clearances.”
Ansar Commander of BRTA, Wahed Mia said: “We are doing our duty to the best of our abilities and have punished 14-15 brokers in the last two days.”
