Security Council’s closed-door Rohingya talks Jul 23The UN Security Council will have a closed-door meeting on Myanmar situation next week.
UNSC current chair Sweden convened the meeting on Monday, said diplomatic sources.
A senior diplomat said, Special Envoy on Myanmar to the UN Secretary-General Christine Schraner Burgener will brief the Council about the current situation.
Burgener visited Dhaka last week after travelling to Myanmar in June.
“Other UN agencies, including the UNHCR will also brief the Security Council,” he said.
There is a possibility of holding an open meeting next month when United Kingdom will take over the Council’s chair, he added.
About the letters sent by UNSC to Myanmar and Bangladesh, another diplomat said, “We are working on responding to the letter and we will hand over our response very soon.”
After the visit of UNSC team to Bangladesh and Myanmar in April, it sent two separate letters to Dhaka and Naypyitaw seeking clarification on several matters.
