Describing the movement against quotas in public service a discreet campaign against Freedom Fighters, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina says she is unable to understand the logic behind a movement, reports agencies.
Her comments came on Tuesday after launching electronic distribution of honorary allowances among freedom fighters to their bank accounts (government to person) in Cox's Bazar through a video conference from her official residence the Ganabhaban
"What's the reason behind such a sudden movement against the quota system? We don't understand," UNB quoted the prime minister saying.
Hasina said that she feared that the movement was an inconspicuous campaign against freedom fighters children’s privilege, state news agency BSS reported.
The government, however, is looking into issue but without defying the court’s order.
“We cannot ignore the court order and abolish Freedom Fighters’ quota (but) we have formed a committee led by the cabinet secretary to reviews the existing system.”
The existing system allows coming applicants from the merit list, if eligible candidates are not found under the Freedom Fighters’ quota, said the prime minister.
“But, some of our intellectuals who have no knowledge about the court order are speaking for annulment of the freedom fighters’ quota in their television talk-shows, writings and speeches,” the BSS report quoted her saying.
