Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokon slammed the councillors after they lost their temper with a journalist during a media briefing on the city corporation budget.
On Sunday (Sept 1) the DSCC announced a budget of over Tk 36 billion for the 2019-20 fiscal year.
During the media call following the announcement some councillors lashed out at Bangla Tribune’s journalist Shahed Shafiq when he asked questions about their responsibilities.
“Based on the councillors’ application two years ago, they were given the charge to control the cleaners and anti-mosquito drive employees. However, the citizens allege that the councillors are not carrying out their job properly. Does this responsibility lie solely with the mayor or are the councillors supposed to carry it out as well?” he asked.
The councillors lost their temper and some even stepped forward to physically assault the journalists when other journalists stopped them.
The situation came under control when Mayor Khokon stepped in and lashed out at the councillors for their behaviour.
“I’m surprised! Are you guys supposed to be councillors? They are our guests,” he said.
Following the incident, DSCC ward-4 councillor Golam Hossain apologised for their behaviour.
