Mosquito repellents being sprayed on mosquito samples. The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has borrowed 40 thousand litres of mosquito repellents from Dhaka North following allegations that their medicines are ineffective against mosquitoes.
Amidst the worst dengue outbreak to hit the country, the city corporations and the mosquito repellents they use have come under fire for failure to control mosquitoes.
Although several quarters have raised questions about DSCC’s repellents, the employees argue that those have been re-tested and have been found to be 100 percent effective.
Dhaka North City Corporation’s (DNCC) repellents have not been completely free of criticism either.
According to DSCC officials they still have their medicines in stock but have borrowed repellents from Dhaka North due to the ongoing criticisms.
“We use a mixture of several components with one medicine,” Dhaka North chief health officer Mominur Rahman Mamun told Bangla Tribune.
He added that one person carried out a test and found one component to be ineffective while the rest of the two were fine.
“But particular medicine passed our field tests, plan protection wing and IEDCR [Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research]” he said.
Echoing Mamun, DSCC assistant procurement officer Liakat Hossain said that since there were questions about their medicines, they have borrowed 40,000 litres from Dhaka North.
“We still have 40,000 litres of our own medicines in stock,” he said and added that they are using both medicines so as to leave no room for doubt for the citizens.
