ACC report finds 11 points of corruption at WASA

A general view of Dhaka WASA building in the capital’s Karwan Bazar.Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Md. Tajul Islam has received a report on WASA’s corruption by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC, commissioner) Dr. Mozammel Huq.
After submitting the report he told the media that they have identified 11 points where graft may take place.
This is the 14th report on corruption at government institutions, he added. There will be reports on a total of 25 institutions.
In a Tk 5.21 billion project in Mirpur, Tk 520 million excess cost was shown; this was done with the connivance of the contractors.
The report states that an excess cost of Tk 5.52 billion was shown in the Dhaka city water collection project. It further finds that work was given to contractors favoured by WASA officials.

To counter the corruption, ACC made 12 recommendations.
“We have taken the report into account; if any government official is found to be complicit then adequate measures will be taken,” said the minister.
