Ruling Awami League’s mayor candidate in the Gazipur Jahangir Alam has taken a lead of 185,000 over the BNP’s Hasan Uddin Sarker in 345 out of 425 voting centres.
According to the latest figures, Jahangir got 356,394 votes while Hasan polled 170,877.
The vote counting updates are being announced by the returning officer at the Bangataz Auditorium in Gazipur city.
With around 1.14 million voters, polls for the Gazipur City Corporation opened at 8am and ended on 4pm.
Voting was postponed at seven centres for irregularities.
The Election Commission used electronic voting machines (EVMs) at six centres, where 14,425 voters cast their franchise. Awami League’s Jahangir bagged 4,810 votes with boat symbol while Hasan polled 2,338 for the sheaf of paddy.
Apart from a few sporadic incidents, the Gazipur polls ended peacefully.
While voter turnout was sparse early in the morning, the numbers saw a marked rise in the afternoon. The presence of women voters was noteworthy.
At the Kassempur madrasa centre, clashes erupted between two rival councilor candidates, resulting in five wounded persons.
Later, police went, controlled the situation and suspended voting for some time.
Apart from this, voting was suspended at certain centres due to ballot paper shortage, claimed election authorities.
