No significant boost for primary education

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has proposed to allocate a total of Tk 240.40 billion for the country’s primary education in the 2019-20 fiscal year, – nearly 18 percent up from the previous fiscal.
“I propose to allocate a total of Tk 240.40 billion for the primary education sector, which was Tk 205.21 billion in the budget for current FY2018-19,” Kamal said in his budget speech on Thursday (Jun 13).
The government will also take a pilot project titled ‘Digital Primary Education’ to facilitate qualitative improvement in education by enhancing the capacity of primary education together with the use of ICT.
Under the project, interactive classrooms will be established in 503 model primary schools.
In FY20, the government will also continue the ongoing development projects on primary and mass education including construction of classrooms in schools on the basis of prioritized requirements; demand driven repair and refurbishment of schools; construction of wash-blocks and tube wells in schools; providing budget for implementation of school level improvement plan (SLIP) and upazila primary education plan (UPEP) in all government primary schools; recruitment of teachers; providing Dip-in-Ed and subject-specific trainings to teachers; supplying comptuers and ICT equipment to schools, offices and training institutes; distribution of free text books; and the stipend programme, Kamal informed the House.
