Highways in Bangladesh have never been better, Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader says as home rush for Eid picked up momentum on Friday (May 31).
“There are no traffic jams. Travelling during the Eid holidays this year will be relaxing,” he said during his visit to Dhaka's Gabtoli inter-district bus terminal to inspect mobile court operation by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
The minister also said his ministry is monitoring ferry gates so that people can easily cross the Padma River without being hassled.
During the visit, Quader talked with some home-bound travellers, and bus counter managers, and listened to their opinions.
He warned that mobile courts will take strict action against anyone charging a higher fare.
Quader said: “There has been no news of extra fares being charged, or extortion. Mobile courts and law enforcement agencies are always alert to prevent these.”
The minister asked drivers to drive carefully; then urged bus company owners to appoint skilled drivers and provide them free counselling to tackle tough situations during their travels.
He urged drivers not to drive buses on the wrong side of the road, a practice that has led to gridlock on numerous occasions.
