Six EVM proposed in Gazipur city corporation polls

Gazipur City Corporation ElectionA proposal has been sent to the Election Commission to use electronic voting machine (EVM) in six centres and close-circuit (CC) camera in three centres in Gazipur City Corporation Election, said Returning Officer Rakib Uddin Mondol.

“After the final decision, we will give an EVM demonstration to the voters,” he said through phone Sunday.

It is proposed that EVM would be used in Chapulia Model Government Primary School, Chapulia Mofizuddin Khan High School, Mariali Government Primary School centres -1 and 2, Rani Bilashmoni Government Boys High School centres 1 and 2.

CC camera will be used in Gazipur Government Women College, Kanaia Government Primary School and Bashir Uddin Udayan Academy centres.

Gazipur Sadar Upazila election officer Md Aslam said, seven candidates from Awami League, BNP and other parties are vying for mayor post while 254 will contest for 57 general councilor posts. In addition, for the 19 reserve seats 84 candidates will compete.

Gazipur City Corporation Assistant Returning Officer Tarifuzzaman said, the city corporation has 1.13 million voters in 57 wards.

570 thousands male and 567 thousand female voters will have the opportunity to exercise their franchise in the election to be held on Jun 26.

This is the second election after Gazipur City Corporation was established. In the first election in 2013, the total voter was 1.03 million.
