Biman Bangladesh Airlines is sending a special flight to Myanmar to bring back the Bangladeshi passengers and crew, who were injured after one of its planes skidded off the runway in Yangon while landing on Wednesday (May 8).
The Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft came off the runway as it landed in bad weather at Yangon's international airport, injuring at least 17 people and seriously damaging the aircraft.
The flight was carrying 29 passengers and four crew, when it skidded off the runway while landing in Myanmar's commercial capital.
“All of the passengers are safe. A special flight will leave Dhaka at 10pm [on Wednesday] to bring back them,” said Biman’s General Manager for PR Shakil Meraj told Bangla Tribune.
The flight, however, left at 11pm.
A photo published by the Myanmar Times showed the plane halfway off the runway with its fuselage apparently broken.Nineteen people were admitted to North Okkalapa General Hospital, Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury said.
The injuries were not life-threatening, the he said before adding others on board the flight were also injured but released after first aid at the airport.
The Myanmar Department of Civil Aviation said in an announcement on its Facebook page that the airport reopened but a part of the runway next to the accident site was still nonoperational.
The aircraft fuselage broke in three and the undercarriage collapsed, according to Aviation Safety Network, which covers air accident and safety issues.Weather at Yangon was poor due to the presence of a thunderstorm in the area, it said in an entry on the accident on its website.
There was no fire and all on board are said to have survived, it added.
Photos published by different Myanmar media and posted on social media showed rescue personnel working while the wrecked plane was on a grassy field next to a runway.
The photos also showed uniformed men with bloody injuries getting off an ambulance with others’ help.
