At least 10 persons were injured Wednesday morning in a clash between two pro-government groups of workers of the Power Development Board (PDB) at the Motijheel Biddut Bhaban, in the capital.
Of the injured, three have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). PDB sources said leaders of both the two groups called meetings at PDB premises at the same time.
Reportedly, followers of Chandan Sarker and Shahid Dakua called the meeting demanding new collecting bargaining agent (CBA) election while followers of present CBA President, Zahirul Islam Chowdhury, and General Secretary, Alauddin Mia, called a general meeting to amend the constitution to remain in power.
As both meetings were at the same venue and time, police imposed a ban, prohibiting a congregation.
However, workers belonging to two sides gathered, defying the police ban, at the PDB, Motijheel premises.
This eventually triggered a bloody clash, leaving at least 10 injured workers.
Among them, critically wounded Shahid Dakua, Zainal Abedin and Mafizur Rahman have been admitted to DMCH. The agitated workers also ransacked the PDB building.
When contacted, Chandan Kumar told Bangla Tribune that hired goons attacked them while they were trying to organise a rally, demanding a new CBA election.
Zahirul Islam Chowdhury emphatically said that the meeting will be held despite the clash. Two ministers are on the way to join the meeting, he informed.
Police, however, stopped the meeting soon after it started.
Sources said, both Zahirul and Alauddin are at present on Post Retirement Leave (PRL) from August 31 and June 5 respectively.
It’s widely believed that though they wish to cling to power, by changing the constitution, a good number of workers are reluctant to abide by their leadership.
Motijheel thana OC, Md Omar Faruq told the Bangla tribune: “Followers of both the groups fled the scene after police reached the spot on information over the clash at 11:30am; the situation is under control at present.”
