Six companies will be in charge of operating 22 bus routes in Dhaka by next year, says South City Mayor Sayeed Khokon.
He made the announcement on Wednesday (Apr 10) after a meeting of the task force committee on public transport system.
“Once implemented, it will bring discipline in the runaway public transport sector. We expect it to launch by December next year,” said Mayor Khokon.
Circular bus services will be launched in Motijheel area by the end of April while in Uttara at the beginning of May, he added.
Khokon said that some 4,500 new buses—half of which will be air-conditioned—will be introduced in the capital, whereas, all old buses will be removed within two years.The Dhaka north and south city corporations launched circular bus services on Mar 27 on two routes.
As per the plan, four AC buses are plying between Dhanmondi and Azimpur route, and four double-deckers are operating the Abdullahpur-Motijheel route.
