Firefighter Shohel Rana was involved in rescuing the trapped in the fire incident of FR Tower and to provide the rescued people place on his ladder, Rana started to come down but was stuck and the automatic ladder crushed his leg, causing internal damage to his stomach.
Afterwards, he was sent to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka for treatment and then airlifted to Singapore where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday (Apr 8).
As a firefighter, his salary scale was Tk 8,000 and with other facilities, it came to Tk 16-17 thousand. Though the firemen get very little in terms of salary, their sacrifice cannot be measured in monetary terms.
Deputy Director of Fire Service, Debashish Bardhan, says, “We take an oath to safeguard the life and property of the people and our firefighters get the courage to risk their lives through training.”
Disaster specialist, Gowhor Nayeem told Bangla Tribune, “Our fire fighters perform their duties assiduously; comparing their salary with the work would undermine their work.”
They take the risks out of love for the people.
On Apr 8 night, the dead body of Sohel Rana brought back to the country and was received by senior members of the fire service.
Shohel Rana hails from Kishoreganj and joined the service in 2014. With his demise, the death toll of FR Tower fire stands at 27.
