The government has taken a ‘re-development project’ for the congested buildings in Old Dhaka, said Public Works and Housing Minister SM Rezaul Karim.
“There are many buildings in Dhaka that are congested. It’s not possible to take them down overnight,” he said on Saturday (Apr 6).
He added that if there are three buildings on 5 kathas of land, the government will build an apartment complex there according to the building code and distribute the flats amongst the landlords according to the ratio of their land.
“This will ensure that Old Dhaka doesn’t remain congested and in a risky situation,” he said.
“It has become a tradition that a building has an approved plan and a working plan,” he said and added that the discrepancies in building plans will no longer be tolerated.
He added that the government has ensured here is 45 percent gap between buildings at the new urban projects such as Purbachal to ensure that that the buildings aren’t on top of one another and there is no environment pollution.
He said that arrangements for parks, lakes, playgrounds, schools and other such facilities have also been made there.
