Dhaka North Mayor Atiqul Islam has said that businesses will lose their trade licences unless fire safety measures are ensured at their organisations.
He made the announcement at a media call on Saturday (Apr 6) at his offices before leading an inspection of 20 building at the capital’s Gulshan-2, reports media.
“If the necessary safety measures are not in place, we will give the organizations a certain amount of time to make corrections. If they fail to produce results within that timeframe, we will revoke their trade licence,” Atiqul was quoted saying.
A magistrate will accompany the inspections conducted by a wing of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), according to him.
“We have requested the government to grant this wing more authority so we can better perform the task of ensuring fire safety within the DNCC area,” said the Dhaka North mayor.
He said the wing will continue inspection of buildings in the city corporation area till further notice.
Atiqul urged both employers and employees to be vigilant regarding fire safety and building security.
“This city was mostly built without much planning. But now it is up to all of us to ensure fire, electric and building safety for the citizens,” he said.
