Banani inferno: Nine bodies handed over to family

REUTERSDhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) authorities have handed over nine bodies to their family members who were killed on Thursday’s (Mar 28) Banani multi-storey building fire.
Hospital authorities started to hand over the bodies around 3.30am on Friday (Mar 29) and the ninth body was taken by the family around 6am of the same day, said Banani police Sub-Inspector Omar Faruq.
Earlier, on Thursday (Mar 28), the nine victims were identified through their identity cards and family members.
Those identified are: 1. Md Mirza Atikur Rahman, 35, son of A Quader, from Gazipur’s Tongi. Rahman has been identified through his National ID.
2. Amir Hossain Rabbi, 29, son of Aiyub Ali, from Charpara village in Pabna’s Ataikula. Rabbi’s friend Giasuddin identified him. He said, “I along with Rabbi’s family members were able to identify him.”
3. Md Ikhtiyar Hossain, 32, son of Ichahoq Ali, from Baniya Para village in Kushtia’s Kumarkhali. Hossain has been identified through his National ID.
4. Sheikh Zarin Tasmim Bristi, 25, daughter of Mozayedul Islam and wife of Kazi Nur, from Jashore’s Bejpara. She was an employee of EUR Service at FR Tower. Her cousin Zesan identified him. He said: “Bristy is my cousin. She was a receptionist in EUR services at the 11th floor of the building.
5. Anjir Abir, 24, son of Abu Bakkar Siddique, from Lalmonirhat district’s Patgram Thana. Abir’s brother in law was able to identify him.
6. Md Monjur Hasan, 50, son of Monsur Rahman, Dhaka’s Mirpur. Hasan has been identified through his National ID
7. Md Fazle Rabbi, 35, son of Johurul Haque, from Bhuighar village in Narayanganj’s Sadar Upazila. Another two deceased are Abdullah Al Faruque and Rumki Akhter.
At least 19 people have died and nearly 70 others injured after a fire broke out at the multi-storey ‘FR Tower’ on the Kamal Ataturk Avenue in the upmarket commercial area in Dhaka’s Banani.
It took 25 fire service units over six hours to douse the flame.
Members of Army, Air Force, Navy, police, RAB, Red Crescent and many other volunteers worked with Fire Service units in the effort to put out the fire.
