Banani’s 22-storied FR Tower where the massive fire broke out doesn’t have any fire fighting capacity of its own, said Fire Service Director (Development and Planning) SM Zulfiker Rahman.
“These accidents and casualties will keep on increasing unless these buildings are equipped to deal with a fire on their own,” he told the media on Thursday (Mar 28).
“Almost 95 percent of the fire is under control,” he said and added that due to the high temperature the fire is still burning in some places.
“Our units are trying to bring the fire under control. Our rescue teams are searching every floor,” he said.
He said that so far 68 people have been injured but the casualties can be reported definitely after the fire is under control.
He said that the death toll may rise and their teams were already in for detail searching.
Rahman added that five-seven floors above the ninth floor have been damaged.
“We can’t say yet what caused the fire but in these buildings, it’s usually due to electricity,” he said.
“The accident happened because the building wasn't built according to the national building code.”
He said that they have formed a three-member committee to probe the matter.
Earlier on Thursday, a massive fire broke out on the ninth floor of Banani’s multistoried FR Tower killing 19 people so far.
