Nearly 350 people held in the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) anti-drug raid in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur have been released after question, but nearly another 150 will face penalties through mobile courts, says the elite police unit.
The massive detention during a two-hour raid on Saturday morning at Geneva Camp came amid a countrywide crackdown on drugs by law-enforcers.
The densely populated area, known to be a hub of illegal drugs in Dhaka, was entirely sealed-off during the raid. As many as 36 teams of the Mohammadpur-based RAB-2 as well as the bomb disposal and dog squad were deployed also took part in the operation.
The scores of detainees included females, students, jobholders as well as people who are out on the street for the daily chores.
“Nearly 350 people have been released as no charges were found against them following background checks and questioning,” said RAB-2 chief Anwar-uz-Zaman.
According to him, nearly another 150 will have to face executive magistrate-led mobile courts.
As many as 15,000 Yaba tablets and 100kg of cannabis have been seized in the raid, said senior RAB officer Zaman.
