Dhaka University (DU) protesters along with members of five panels that participated in the Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) polls have taken position in front of the Vice Chancellor’s office, demanding re-election to the DUCSU polls, scrapping the Mar 11 one.
They also demanded the resignation of VC Prof MD Akhteruzzaman.
The protesters led a rally from the Raju Sculpture on campus to the VC’s office on Wednesday (Mar 13).
Demanding that the re-election be announced by Saturday (Mar 16), Faruk Hassan, who contested for the assistant general secretary from the Quota Reform Movement panel said, “All the cases against us must be withdrawn.”
“Our demands will be given to the university VC in the form of a memorandum. We don’t accept such a farcical poll,” said Umme Habiba Benzir, who contested for the post of General Secretary from the Bangladesh Chhatra Federation panel.
The student delegation went to meet the VC with the memorandum.
There were allegations of widespread vote rigging and irregularities in the DUCSU polls held after 28 years.
Several opposition panels including Chhatra Dal, leftist alliance bodies and students alike broke out in protests, boycotting the polls with calls for strike and hunger strike after the results were announced in the early hours of Tuesday.
