The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the ruling party’s student affiliate, has congratulated Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) vice president-elect Nurul Haque Nur.
Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, the BCL candidate who lost to Nur, met him on the campus and congratulated him before pledging to work with all.
Shovon, who serves as the president of the BCL’s central unit, polled 9,129 votes in Monday’s election but lost as Nur bagged 11,062 votes.
Nur, an English Department student and one of the organisers of quota reform protests, has produced the biggest shock in DUCSU history by winning the top DUCSU post.
BCL’s Golam Rabbani has won the post of DUCSU general secretary and Saddam Hussain assistant general secretary.
This is the first time someone from outside the panels of the student groups has won the VP post of DUCSU after independence.
The ruling Awami League’s student affiliate won most VP, GS and AGS posts in 18 hall unions, but independent candidates dominated the halls for female students.
Handing over flowers to Nur, Shovon urged the newly elected VP to accept the result of the Ducsu election held yesterday after around 28 years.
Shovon, who was also a VP contestant, also called up on all students of the university to accept the result of the election for the sake of peaceful environment on the university campus.
Responding to the BCL leader’s call, Nur withdrew the class boycotting programme and said he wants justice of the BCL men who attacked him during the election.
Besides, Shuvon also asked the BCL men, who were demonstrating in front of the VC residence demanding reelection to the Ducsu, to stop their agitation accepting the Ducsu polls result.
Earlier in the day, Nur, the popular quota reformist leader, has said they will continue their class boycott programme until re-election to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) is held.
Nur, the fresh VP-elect from Monday’s DUCSU election, was speaking at a press briefing after being attacked allegedly by Chhatra League men.
“We want re-election except to the posts of VP and social welfare secretary. None of our demands have been met. Our class boycott will continue indefinitely. Our further course will be announced later,” he said at that time.
