The student wing of the ruling Awami League has won all the posts in the Dhaka University’s Haji Mohammad Mohsin Hall union.
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) panel’s Shahidul Hall Shishir has been elected the Hall’s Vice President with 760 votes while his nearest contender Shakil Mia secured 217.
With 621 votes Mehedi Hasan Mizan has been elected the Hall union General Secretary and his nearest opponent got 251 votes.
Md Sadil Abbas is the Assistant General Secretary-elect, who bagged 703 votes with his nearest competitor received 203.
Chhatra League panel's candidates won rest of the Mohsin Hall union posts as well.
The Hall union’s Returning Officer Prof Dr Mdc Abul Kalam Azad announced the results around 5:15 on Monday (Mar 11).
Earlier in the day, protests erupted across the Dhaka University campus after all student bodies, except for the BCL panel boycotted the student union polls alleging widespread rigging and irregularities.
Supporters of the leftist coalition, quota reformists’ panel, pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), leftist Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, as well as the panel of independent candidates took to the streets.
Soon after announcing to boycott the elections to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and residential hall unions, protesters marched to the vice-chancellor’s office and started demonstrating there.
The much-awaited DUwere polls was held after 28-year hiatus.
