Quader to undergo bypass surgery: Doctor

Awami League Secretary General Obaidul Quader, who is suffering from cardiac complications, will undergo bypass surgery after doctors treat infections and kidney complications, says Dr Abu Nasar Rizvi.

On Tuesday (Mar 5), Dr Rizvi, who is among those flown with Quader to Singapore, sent a video brief to the media updating the senior leader’s condition.

Rizvi’s video brief was presented in a media call by the Quader’s aide Anu Naser.

The brief also said that on Monday (Mar 3), the Mount Elizabeth Hospital formed a five-member panel of doctors, who ran initial checkups on the senior Awami League leader after he was admitted there.

“The medical board has said that Obaidul Quader’s condition is stable, however, there is some infection and kidney complications, which need to addressed first. One those complications are treated a bypass surgery will be performed on him,” Dr Rizvi said.

He also added that the Road Transport Minister’s health is steadily improving.

On Monday. Quader was airlifted from Dhaka to the Singapore hospital after renowned Indian Cardiologist Dr Devi Shetty visited him at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical Hospital and suggested the move.

Mount Elizabeth Hospital’s air ambulance landed at Seletar Airport just before 8pm Bangladesh time, according to officials of the Bangladesh High Commission.

Quader has been taken to the hospital, where he is being treated under Philip Koh, an interventional cardiology specialist for Mount Elizabeth.

The ambulance carrying Quader set off from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) at 3:22pm before reaching the airport’s VIP Terminal 20 minutes later.

A security detail accompanied the ambulance from the BSMMU Hospital and the roads had been cleared beforehand.

On Sunday (Mar 3), Quader was rushed to BSMMU after he was having trouble breathing.

He was diagnosed with three arterial blocks and one of those was removed by stenting the same day.
