Today is ‘World Standard Day’.
This year the theme of the day is ‘Standards Make Cities Smarter.’
Like many other countries, various programs have been taken to celebrate this day in Bangladesh. Regarding the day, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have given separate messages.
Bangladesh Standards & Testing Institution (BSTI) has organized several programs as a national standards body. BSTI has organized discussion meeting of its regional offices as a part of this program. Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will telecast special program about this purpose. On the other hand different important places of capital city are being decorated by banner, festoon and placard.
The President in his message said, ‘It is essential for Bangladesh to follow 'international standard' to become a middle-income country within 2021 and to be a prosperous country by 2041.’ He called upon BSTI to play a more skilled, transparent and responsible role in reaching desired services to city dwellers through enhancing the quality of products.
He further said, ‘People are going to city due to various socio-economic reasons. As a result, urbanization and industrialization are expanding. For the need of beautiful urbanization it is necessary to ensure civil facilities and construction standards as well as planning. Combined efforts of all concerned can play an effective role to build a well-planned city. I believe that the celebration of this year's standard day will work to fulfill that goal.’
In her message, the Prime Minister said there is no alternative to generating unique high quality goods and services to survive in competition in the era of globalization.
Sheikh Hasina said: ‘Greatest Bangalee of all time Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wanted that Bangladesh does not get deprived of any benefit from any invention of the world and wanted that the people of Bangladesh are ensured a better life.’
‘To achieve this goal, Bangladesh in 1974 under the leadership of Bangabandhu had gained membership of the then standards organisation BDSI,’ she added.
