Chawkbazar fire death toll rises to 68

A victim of the fire at Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar has died after being treated for five days at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) taking the death toll to 68.
DMCH burns unit Resident Doctor Partha Shankar Paul told Bangla Tribune that 55-year-old Anwar succumbed to his wounds at 10.15pm on Monday (Feb 25).
Sixty-seven people were killed in the devastating fire at Chawkbazar’s Churihatti on the night of Feb 20.
Among those injured, nine, including deceased Anwar, were admitted to the DMCH burns unit in critical conditions, doctors had said.
On Monday, Bangladesh observed the official day of mourning for the victims and families affected by the Chawkbazar fire, to express their solidarity and to pray for the departed souls.
The national flag flew at half-mast at all government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutions at home and in the foreign missions abroad. Officials at different ministries including the cabinet division in the secretariat were seen to wear black bands.
