Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has expressed his disappointment at major parties for their decision to not take part in the upcoming Upazila polls.
“A number of major parties are not taking part in the Upazila election and this is disappointing. We have always wanted a competitive and participatory election," said the CEC at a workshop for election officials held at the Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in Dhaka’s Agargaon, on Sunday (Feb 17).
Huda, however, added that he believes that he Upazila polls will still be competitive.
Nurul Huda said: "However, we believe even if the polls are not going to be completely participatory, they will be competitive."
Warning election officials, the CEC said, "Strict measures will be taken against irregularities in duty.”
"You must conduct the election in a neutral manner," Huda told the officials before adding, "Your only responsibilities are those which falls within the guidelines stipulated in the Constitution.”
The CEC further warned election officials to stay cautious about enthusiastic supporters who often engage in illegal activities without their party or candidate’s consent.
