Flanked by party leaders and activists, Atiqul, who is contesting the Feb 28 polls with the boat logo, visited the shrine of Shah Kabir before launching the campaign.
Soliciting votes, Atiqul told the gathering, “Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina has nominated me to modernize the Dhaka North … I promise you to present a beautiful Dhaka city in return of your support.”
He appealed to everyone for working together against the spread of drugs, corruption, and terrorism.
Pledging to build more playgrounds in the city, the mayor-runner said, “There’s no better alternative to fight against drugs and terrorism than sports.”
Dhaka is overpopulated and ensuring services for its denizens is a challenge, Atiqul said before adding, “I hope to work with everyone, including MPs, to reform the city in a pristine manner.”
The ruling party candidate said he chose Uttarkhan, a suburb, to start his campaign in line with his predecessor the late Annisul Huq’s approach of dealing with obstacles.
“I have started my campaign from the rural area because I take this matter seriously. For this very reason, we have come here at Shah Kabir’s Mazar in the first place.”
