Election Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed briefs the media after a meeting between the Commission and a delegation of Jatiya Oikya Front at the EC office in the city on Nov 5. FOCUS BANGLA/File PhotoElection Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said that voting will first be carried out in upazilas which are peaceful.
He made the comment at a training programme of election officials and Electronic Voting Machine, EVM, use.
There was disorder in several centres in Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram so we will hold elections in these, later on, he said.
He also said that three hill tract districts will be completed in unison.
Alluding to BNP’s boycott of the UP polls, he said: “a political party is not taking part but many may take part as independent candidates.”
Since party symbols will not be used, there will be several independent candidates, which will make the election challenging.
The schedule for the first phase of elections may be declared today, the secretary said.
“At the main upazila council, votes will be cast using EVMs,” informed the EC secretary.
The commission has already approved the rules for using EVMs which will soon be sent to the ministry of law, he added.
“EC has plans to use EVMs at city-corporation, UP and municipal elections.”
