Supreme Court of Bangladesh. BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainThe High Court (HC) said that Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) is an independent organization and if they operate independently, then development will continue. Otherwise, the country will plunge into anarchy.

The observation was made by a Joint HC bench of Justices, FRM Nazmul Ahsan and KM Kamrul Qauder, while accepting ACC’s explanation on the complaint that wrong persons were in jail in 33 cases.

At the court, confusion over a case involving one Khurshid Alam Jahlam, was shown as erroneous.

ACC said that after getting information from Sonali and Bangladesh Bank, FIR was lodged against Abu Salek and later, Jahlam’s name emerged in the charge sheet.

The court said, “We don’t want to interfere with ACC’s work but it has to investigate a case properly, and not issue a notice against a person without proper probe.”

Why did a person spend more than two years in jail when he was not a criminal, the court asked and said, “ACC has to be more transparent.”

Later, the court exonerated Jahlam from 26 cases.

For embezzlement of Tk 185 million, 33 cases were lodged against Abu Salek, but instead of the accused, Jahlam has ended in jail and appears at the hearings.

Jahlam is a jute mill worker and on Feb 6, his will have completed three years in prison.
