There is a possibility of a discussion on the Rohingya issue in the Security Council at the behest of France and UK.
On September 29, the French representative in an open discussion in the Security Council on Myanmar situation said, ‘France will hold the monthly UN Security Council presidency as of October 1 and we will pay full attention to the situation of Myanmar. We will organize open discussions with the help of the UK, and there Kofi Annan will be present with other discussants.’
French representative said, ‘We will be able to know more about the actual situation in Myanmar. At the same time, how the recommendations of the Coffee Anan Commission, can be implemented and what we can do about this, will also be discussed.’
In this context, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told, ‘This is a good initiative and we have participated in the open discussion of September in the Security Council. We will certainly participate in the Security Council again if invited to discuss on this issue. '
It is to be noted that, in the Security Council discussions on the Myanmar issue hold 4 days and on 29 September there was an open discussion.
Bangladesh's permanent representative Masud bin Momen urged in his speech to continue international pressure on Myanmar to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
He said to the Security Council, ‘From the experience of the last three decades it is found that the bilateral talks with Myanmar lost effectiveness when the international pressure is lifted. Since 25 August, nearly 500,000 people had entered Bangladesh, fleeing violence in northern Rakhine state. Besides, thousands of Rohingya have been killed. Thousands of homes have been burnt down.’
Inviting the members of the Security Council to visit Bangladesh and Myanmar, Masud bin Momen said, ‘Through this, they will know what type of torture is being done to Rohingyas.’
