The demand came at a human chain in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday (Jan 15).

Addressing the demonstration, the speakers said, “Education is obligatory for men and women in Islam. So, Shafi’s remark on women education is nothing but against hadith, the sayings of Prophet Mohammad.”

They said, “Women hold top position in the country’s different sectors of including the heads of Parliament and the Opposition. Thousands of women work at factories. Shafi’s remark is to hinder the country’s march towards development.

“So, he (Shafi) must withdraw his remarks and apologise publicly,” the speakers demanded.
