Amid demonstrations observing strike across education institutions across the country, a senior cabinet member has made it clear that the quotas in civil service will be entirely abolished.
“The prime minister’s decision is final. There will be no quotas,” Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader told the media on Sunday.
In face of demonstrations by students and job-seekers demanding reforms to quota, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced last month to rescind the system.
Her announcement in parliament came after demonstrations spread across the country with capital Dhaka brought down to its knees.
However, protests have been launched again, now demanding the publication of the official order on the decision.
Quader asked the demonstrators to keep faith on the prime minister. “Threatening to launch protests is inappropriate.”
