The members of the new Cabinet will take oath to their offices on Monday (Jan 7), Cabinet Division Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said.The date was finalised after the meeting between President Md Abdul Hamid and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina at the Bangabhaban on Thursday (Jan 3), he told Bangla Tribune.
“If everything goes according to the plans, the new Cabinet members will be sworn in at 3pm on Monday at the Bangabhaban’s Darbar Hall,” Alam said.
After taking her oath to office as an MP of the 11th National Parliament, Hasina went to the Ganabhaban, where the president invited her to form the government.
The Awami League is about to form a government for an unprecedented third straight term after winning the election on Dec 30. It won 259 of 299 seats while the Grand Alliance it leads won 288 seats.
Its senior leader Tofail Ahmed told Bangla Tribune that oath-taking will take place on Monday.
“However, details like who will be in the Cabinet or the size of it will be decided by Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina,” said the party’s Advisory Council member.
Earlier in the day, the newly-elected members of Bangladesh’s 11th national parliament were sworn in to office.
The ceremony began at the oath-taking chamber of the parliament around 11am, with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administering oaths of office to Awami League MPs, who will form the largest bloc.
Speaker Chaudhury began by administering the oath of office on herself and then proceeded to read out the oath to other MPs.
The Jatiya Paty MPs were sworn in around 12.30pm, but party chairman and former military strongman HM Ershad was not there.
The Jatiya Oikya Front, the opposition alliance that includes the BNP, won seven seats. The alliance has rejected theoutcome of the election as 'farcical' citing rigging and violence and said that its MPs-elect will not join the parliament.
