Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary said that voting is going on peacefully across the country with a few sporadic unfortunate incidents.
The IGP made the comments after casting his vote at the Viqarunnisa School and College in Dhaka on Sunday morning (Dec 30).
With blanket security, voting is taking place without any major disruption, he observed.
Saying that there was violence in one centre in Chittagong, he said, “In one centre, five law enforcers were wounded and two weapons looted and at a centre in Mymensingh, weapons were looted and one law enforcer wounded.”
In Noakhali, electoral materials were reported to have been looted, which the police are trying to recover.
However, in Bhairab, attempts to loot electoral equipment were unsuccessful.
Responding to an accusation by Dr. Kamal Hossain that many votes were cast secretly last night, the IGP said, “We did not receive any such complaint.”
Election will be competitive, he commented and added, “If there is violence then we will take necessary steps.”
We are monitoring social media posts and a few have been arrested while trying to disseminate fabricated and damaging news, he said.
The IGP also confirmed that no polling agent of the opposition parties has been driven out.
Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain came to Viqarunnisa Noon School and College polling station and observed the election atmosphere.
