Amid protestors’ announcement for tougher movements, the government has said that the administrative panel over reforms to quotas in civil service will be formed within three days.
“The committee, which the prime minister had referred to, will be formed within two to three days. It has been proposed that the cabinet secretary should head it,” Md Mozammel Haque Khan, senior secretary to the public administration, told Bangla Tribune on Wednesday.
“The panel’s decision will be published as a gazette notification by the ministry,” he added. Khan, one of the senior bureaucrats, said the committee will forward its recommendation “within very short.”
The government’s statement came hours after protesters warned of a tougher movement, setting Thursday as a deadline for an official order on quotas.
The demonstrators’ warning followed cabinet secretary’s remarks on Monday that there were no updates on the matter of quotas to civil service.
Amid protests by students and job-seekers demanding reforms to quotas, Prime Minister Sheik Hasina announced last month to rescind the entire quota system.
According to the existing system, the government keeps a quota of 30 percent for the families of freedom fighters, 10 percent for women, 10 percent for various districts and 5 percent for minorities and 1 percent for disabled people.
