Historical, traditional and archaeological sites of Bangladesh also attract tourists along with the natural beauty. But still, there is no system in Bangladesh to pass the knowledge and history of those sites through trained tourist guides. Concerned people in this sector said that initiatives should be taken as soon as possible to make arrangements for tourist guides.
Along with tourists, local and foreign students also visit archaeological sites to know about ancient history and heritage of Bangladesh. As there is no trained tourist guide to pass the knowledge and history, they depend on the plates where the history of the site is written. As a result, the real history, the tradition, and significance of the site remain unknown to them.
However, tour operators who work with foreign tourists have arranged tourist guides in their own initiative.
Taslim Amin Shovon Director of Tour Operator Association of Bangladesh said in this context, “We have own tourist guides to work with foreign tourists. But initiatives should be taken for the arrangement of tourist guides to work with the tourists who come in private initiatives.”
Dr. Saker Ahmed, Professor and Chairman of Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management of Dhaka University said, “Historical monuments, museums, archaeological sites are not just a place to see but a source of knowledge. It is necessary to present the background of the site so that the tourists can feel the essence of it. This is the task of the tourist guides. Training is necessary to develop skilled tourist guides.”
Dr. Md Nasir Uddin Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) said, “We have a crisis of tourist guides. However, all tourist spots are not under the Ministry of Tourism and Tourism Board. As a result, it is not possible for us to implement all the decisions. But we will take integrated initiatives to solve the crisis to move ahead.”
The total number of museum, historical and archeological sites is around 450. Besides, there are numerous architectural structures with historical significance including the National Memorial, Shaheed Minar, and Aparajeyo Bangla. There are 17 archaeological museums across the country. The notable museums are Lalbagh Museum, Paharpur Museum, Mahasthan Archaeological Museum, Shilaidaha Kuthibari Museum, Rabindra Complex and Mainamati Museum.
