Eight dead in lightning across Bangladesh

In 2016, Bangladesh declared lightning strikes a disaster after a near record number of deaths that year.As many as eight people died as thunderstorms lashed across the country on Wednesday.
In the northeastern district of Habiganj three people have died after being struck by lightning while one death was reported each from Kishoreganj, Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon and Panchagarh, reported correspondents.
All of the victims in Habiganj were peasants, who were struck while working on farms. Two others have been hospitalised with burn injuries.
The deaths were reported from the district’s Baniachong and Nabiganj Upazilas, said police.
In the northern district of Panchagarh, a woman has died early on Wednesday.
The incident was reported from Chaklahat Union near the district town. The 35-year-old housewife died while neighbours were taking her to the local hospital, said Panchagarh police OC Rabiul Hasan.
The death in Kishoreganj has been reported from the Nikli Upazila.
A 32-year-old farm labourer died and two others, including a 10-year-old, has been hospitalised in critical conditions, said Nikli police OC Nasiruddin Ahmed.
In the divisional city of Rajshahi, a 60-year-old man died early afternoon on Wednesday when thunderstorms struck.
The victim was rushed to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, said metro police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Iftekhayer Alam.
Police in the northern districts of Chapainawabganj and Naogon have reported the death of two farmers, who were struck by lightning while working on the fields.
