EVMs have been used in some polling stations in local government elections. File photoDespite oppositions from a number of political parties on using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the Election Commission (EC) is moving ahead to introduce the digital voting equipment in the upcoming polls.

EC is likely to pick the constituencies and polling stations, where they want to use EVMs on Saturday (Nov 24).

EC sources say, as many as 48 constituencies have been primarily selected among which any number of seats from one to ten can be finalised for EVM use. The commission might go for installing EVMs in all polling stations of a particular constituency rather than picking several constituencies.

A meeting, to be presided over by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda is likely to take place at the EC headquarters on Saturday afternoon to finalize the matter.

On Oct 30, President Abdul Hamid promulgated the ‘Representation of the People Order (amendment) Ordinance, 2018’ paving way for using EVMs in polls.

Speaking on the matter, CEC on Friday (Nov) said that EVMs will be introduced in the upcoming polls on a limited scale.

Referring to opposition parties’ reservations on EVMs, Huda said, “I request them- send you representatives, let them examine it for themselves. The confusion will be cleared.
