As many as quarter million of Rohingyas, who had crossed the border from Myanmar to Bangladesh, have gone abroad with Bangladeshi passports, says a cabinet member.
“When I travel abroad, a lot of people come to meet me as Bangladeshis. When I ask them where they hail from, it comes out that they are Rohingyas,” Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam said on Saturday.
Speaking at a discussion at a Dhaka hotel, he estimated the number to be between 200,000 and 250,000.
Calling expatriates to send money through legal channels, Islam said they have forwarded a proposal to the prime minister for incentives on remittances.
“The government encourages expatriate Bangladeshis to invest.”
