The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has sentenced two war criminals in Habiganj for committing crimes against humanity during 1971 Liberation war.
The convicts are former Lakhai upazila Awami League President Liakat Ali and Aminul Islam alias Rajab. Both the convicts are fugitive.
A three-member tribunal headed by the ICT Chairman Justice Md Shahinur Islam delivered the verdict on Monday.
The court found both of them guilty in all seven charges pressed against them including charges of mass killing during the liberation war.
Chief prosecutor Golam Arif Tipu, Jeyad al Malum, Rana Das Gupta, Mokhlesur Rahman Badal, Sabina Yasmin Munni and Razia Sultana Chaman were present for the prosecution while Gazi MH Tamim represented the defendants during the announcement of the verdict.
According to case dossiers, Liakat Ali held the post of Lakhai upazila Awami League President from 2003 to 2013. The case was filed against Ali in 2010 when he was still holding the post.
On August 16, the tribunal concluded hearing arguments from both sides and kept the verdict pending for any day.
On November 4, the tribunal fixed Monday (Nov 5) to announce the verdict.
