Dhaka is persuading voters in its last minute campaign for the UN Human Rights Council election which will be held on Friday.
Bangladesh is contesting the election from Asia-Pacific region of the UNHRC, which is very vocal against human rights violation in Myanmar.
To be a member of the body will help Dhaka to raise the Rohingya issue more prominently in the international platform.
Bangladesh needs two-third support from 193 countries to serve in the UN watchdog body from 2019-21 period.
Earlier, Dhaka served in the global body three times - 2007-09, 2010-12 and 2015-2017.
“We are hopeful that we will get the support needed to become the member,” said Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the United Nations Masud bin Momen.
About the Rohingya issue, he said it is a problem between Myanmar and its inhabitants and Bangladesh is the only party to this as it allowed the distressed people to enter into the country.
“We will work with everybody for ultimate solution of this problem, which has its roots in Myanmar and solution must be found in there.”
We don’t want to see repatriated people come back again, which we have seen earlier. “This time we want permanent solution of this problem.”
It is mentionable here, the Council on Sept 27 launched judicial mechanism into Myanmar abuses against Rohingya. Before that the Fact-Finding Mission submitted its full report which found that the Myanmar military had a ‘genocidal intention’ to wipe out Rohingya population.
