The drafting of a law on appointing top court judges is almost finished and will be forwarded to the Cabinet very soon, says Law Minister Anisul Huq.
His statement came on Saturday, while addressing an event of the Bangladesh Bar Council.
He said a proposal for a multi-storey building for the Council now awaits an approval of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
The government has also decided to donate Tk 400 million for the benevolent fund of lawyers. “Lawyers have been saying for long that it was not sufficient. A proposal has been forwarded for approval,” said Huq.
In his address, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain said: “The bar and the bench have separate functions, but supplement each other. Nothing should be done to tarnish the judiciary’s image.”
Urging lawyers to focus on knowledge practice, he said they should be aware on professional misconduct.
Saturday’s event was meant for awarding certificates to the over 3,000 lawyers, who have been inducted to the Bar Council.
