The BNP does not believe that the government-facilitated medical treatment for jailed party chief Khaleda Zia will be effective, says senior leader Moudud Ahmad.
“This is not sufficient and that will only happen, when she will be able to consult with her physicians upon release,” he told the media on Saturday, when authorities took Khaleda to a state-run hospital for medical tests.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda has been taken back to the prison in the afternoon following medical tests at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMUU) Hospital earlier in the day.
Moudud, a member of BNP’s policymaking National Standing Committee, was among the several party leaders and supporters, who gathered at the hospital in the capital’s Shahbagh.A former prime minister, Khaleda has been sentenced to five years in jail on charges of misappropriating foreign funds meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust.
She has been serving her term at the old jailhouse in Nazimuddin Road as the lone inmate since Feb 8, when the court convicted her of a breach of trust by a public servant under the Bangladesh Penal Code.
Speaking to the media at the BSMMU premises, Moudud said Khaleda’s medical condition deteriorated as she has been kept alone in a jail, a decision which he described as a ‘conspiracy’.
“Anyone will fall sick there,” he said before adding that Khaleda was the victim political vengeance.
“The government will be liable if anything happens. The jail code allows her personal physicians to treat her,” said the senior BNP leader.
