Despite several efforts by Bangladesh and Myanmar to repatriate the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees, there has been very little progress in reality, says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“The countries have signed an instrument for repatriating Rohingyas. Several initiatives have been taken, including minister-level meetings, but there is little progress,” she said on Thursday during her meeting with Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty.
Press Secretary to the PM Ihsanul Karim briefed the media on the meeting held at Ganabhaban, the prime minister’s official residence.
Bangladesh is now sheltering nearly 1.1 million Rohingyas, Hasin said during the meeting and added that the Bangladesh government has completed biometric screening of the refugees.
"Bangladesh’s is concerned about the security of the refugees," Karim quoted the PM as saying.
Amnesty International’s Shetty said what the Rohingyas had to face constitutes to severe crime and emphasised on waging a global campaign to mount pressure on Myanmar.
