Hundreds of devotees, who went to attend the main Eid congregation, had to offer their prayers outside the National Eidgah premises in Dhaka due to tight security.
Heightened security measures were adopted for the congregations attended by President Md Abdul Hamid.
A four-tier security arrangement was put in place. Devotees had to wait in long queues before going through a search and enter the premises.
Police had asked devotees not to bring carry anything other than prayer mats and umbrellas. Just before 8am, when the prayers were about to start, hundreds of devotees who were still in queues, put down their prayer mats on the street and joined the prayer.
“We were here only to attend the prayers, the security arrangement is a bit too much,” said a devotee, who declined to give his name.
With devotees joining the prayer from outside, several empty spaces were spotted inside the Eidgah premises.Cabinet members, Supreme Court judges, lawmakers, senior political leaders and high civil and military officials offered prayers at the main Eid congregation
Senior Pesh Imam of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Mufti Maulana Muhammad Ehsanul Huq conducted the Eid prayers.A special munajat was offered seeking divine blessings for peace and progress of Bangladesh and welfare of the people as well as the Muslim Ummah.
After the prayers, President Hamid exchanged Eid greetings with the devotees at the Eidgah.
