At 8:30am on Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received a text message on her mobile phone from one Mayuri, a hijra from Jamalpur, asking her for a sacrificial animal for the Eid-ul-Azha.
Hours later, Mayuri found the Jamalpur deputy commissioner and his staff with a cow at the Hijrapalli in Jamalpur town, where she lives with 87 other hijras.
“Immediately after getting the SMS, the prime minister asked to get details and make sure that they get what they wanted,” Deputy Press Secretary to PM Ashraful Alam Khokan told Bangla Tribune.
Personal Secretary to the PM Tofazzal Hossain contacted Mayuri and conveyed the PM’s instruction to Jamalpur Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Kabir.
Kabir told Bangla Tribune that he handed over the sacrificial animal brought at Tk 100,000 to the hijra community as well as some cash for other expenses on behalf of the prime minister.
